What is a good tablet that is less than $300 and has about a 10 inch screen?

A. There is not going to be much available in that price range in a 10" tablet. Most 10" tablets tart at around $300 and go up from there. However, Best Buy does have 1 tablet available that is quite low priced. It is a fairly new tablet and hasn't been on the market long, so I don't see many reviews around the internet on it. A. They do exist but whether they are 'better' than a laptop is debatable. There are a number of laptops that can also double as tablets, the screens either fold back over the keyboard or can be 'flipped' over and some that just have touch screens but still function like normal laptops (they dont fold back/flip)

Both the art programs you have mentioned are Windows based so you will need a windows based tablet PC (rather than android tablet or an iPad). The cheapest I've seen are refurbished or second hand units starting from £160-200 but they tend to have smaller capcity (either SSD or HD). The full price units are obviously more , expect to pay £500+ ( some are closer to 1K) for a high spec one. Look at the Fujitsu Stylistic ST5112 , Viewsonic ViewPad, Archos 9, ASUS Eee Pad or Acer ICONIA ranges. There are also numerous 'cheap' nonbranded resellers on eBay.

Having the best is relative to what you intend to do with it. The latest Nexus 7 would be the best overall Android based system, the operating software is called Jellybean. The second overall good tablet would be an e-reader that would be Kindle Fire. Reason being, Kindle is tied to Amazon and Nexus is tied to Google, both companies have huge inventory of any and everything you could ever want. As you sift through the tablets ask yourself or someone else to whom does the tablet belong too. This will give you the ambition the manufacturer has for the experience of owning one.

For instance, Sony has an e-reader in black and white. However, Sony's vaults have everything from Michael Jackson's hits to the Beatles in music. Sony has a slew of books and programs its seemingly infinite. On the other hand, Pandigital. Ask yourself to whom does this tablet belong to? Ask out loud. Ask anyone. Ask a stranger walking down the street. Same answer from every where. No one. Pan who? Pandigital might have a good product but they are in the game for a different reason, this company is not bringing forth legacies like Sony, they are trying to make a buck. Sony and Amazon are willing to put in your hand a device that is capable to mine the store so to speak. There store specifically. I recommend you figure out what you want with Googles Nexus 7, Barnes and Nobles Nook, Amazon's Kindle and Sony's e-reader and call it a day. Those brands for the money are your best bet.

This would be a small screen size compared to the aforementioned e-readers but Apple's ipod is a very good choice that can be purchased within your budget, even a refurbished unit can square you away. A. iPad is a good device, but you won't get all the functionality of a full-fledged laptop. At the same time, I can't recommend a 13" MacBook Pro because most people I know that owned one outgrew it in a year or two.

I'd tell you to take a look at the refurbished MacBook Pro 15" instead; you get the same warranty as a brand new one, but it's much less expensive. This one, for instance - http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC721LL/A - is $30 more than the brand new 13" model, has faster graphics, a larger, higher resolution screen, and a quad-core processor. The only drawback is that it lacks USB 3, but USB 3 ports don't like some USB 1 and 2 devices.

As for why to get an Apple over an Asus or any other brand of laptop, being that you'll be a student and you'll need your computer pretty much all the time, Apple has the huge advantage of the Genius Bar. With software issues, Windows-based laptops can be back up and running in a couple of hours, just like a Mac with software issues; however, hardware warranty repairs for a Windows laptop can take between days and weeks depending on who you take it to and how their service works, while most Mac hardware repairs (everything short of replacing the motherboard) can be done at the Genius Bar, usually in as little as 15-30 minutes. The same holds true with desktop computers.

You can probably find a factory refurbished (make sure it "factory" refurbished) one cheap enough, around $200. Please, do NOT consider one of these Chinese-manufactured wholesale tablets $150-350, with weird-sounding names. They look great on paper and in photos, but are amazingly horrible pieces of garbage. A lot of posters like to come on here and link to their online wholesale stores, stating things like "I buy tablet this recently and much happy with it". Yeah... run.
